All Hail the King Cake
Sometimes it's easy to forget that the rest of America doesn't celebrate Mardi Gras. Which explains why, when I finally found a king cake in Austin and brought it to work, only a few people knew what it was. Most of the others just looked at it and then looked at me like I was crazy for expecting them to eat a neon purple, green, and gold iced ring. The best description of what a king cake is that I could come up with was "it's iced, cinnamony, sugary goodness" but I think it would have been more accurate to say "it's the best alcohol sponge in the whole world"

It was pretty good for being a Texas made king cake. mmm...
ReplyDeleteyeah, I've given up all hope in talking to anyone from Arkansas about Mardi Gras, I just get excited and forget about them...I did find a bakery up here that makes them, but they're not as good. I found a recipe online and I'm going to attempt to make one...
ReplyDeleteSome folks here were talking about king cakes the other day. They didn't understand what all of the hoopla was about, because it was after all, only an iced pound cake. I didn't even try to explain. Hopeless.

ReplyDeleteAnd that's why you belong HERE.
ReplyDeleteWhere people know what King Cake is and realize just what an important part of the springtime diet it is. :(
I remember Randazzo's Goodchildren Bakery in Chalmette having THE BEST kingcakes in the galaxy. I wonder if the mail-order ones are as good.
