I know even before the game had started a lot of people were tired of hearing about the Saints and how important of a game this was for New Orleans. The problem was that unless you're from New Orleans, or have some very strong ties to the city, you really can't understand why it mattered this much. I know it's just a game but to New Orleans it was a way of reminding everyone that we are more than just a destroyed city. We cannot be written off as losers anymore. We are Super Bowl Champions.
Today police estimated somewhere between 8,000 to 10,000 people were at the airport to greet the Saints as they landed. Tomorrow schools are closing so families can attend the Saints' parade. 11 people met the Colts at their airport and I've heard nothing about a parade in their honor. Our parade was rolling win or lose because just playing in the Super Bowl was more than enough for us. You might think your town loves its team, but people in New Orleans love their Saints more. They are more than just football to us, they are so ingrained in the city that we wouldn't be us without them.
Bless you boys!

i'm not gonna lie, it was freaking awesome to be here during it all.
ReplyDeletecan't wait for the parade. mardi what?
I may have said this elsewhere, because I recycle, but New Orleans deserved this win if for no other reason than they will CELEBRATE it in the manner which such a win deserves. The video evidence bears that out.
ReplyDeleteIt is also proof that God loves us and has not forgotten us, and by "us" I mean those resisting the NFL's attempt to copyright everything tangentially connected with football, or their attempt to force on us - along with their amen corner in the media) the notion that There Has Never Been A Greater Quarterback Than Peyton Manning (um, hello, Mssrs. Montana, Unitas, Graham and Baugh would like a word). This is proof that brains, balls and belief trump joyless precision every time.
(And yes, before the end of the evening I was blubbering like a sorority girl on Bid Night. I blame the Sazeracs. That absinthe's a hell of a drug.)
If you are a football player and only got to go to the Super Bowl once in your career this would be the team to be on! It is almost sad how less celebratory other cities are. I told Mike that we are reacting like other countries do when they win the World Cup. The rest of the US needs to learn how to celebrate!
ReplyDeleteMy grandfather, who passed away two years ago, was a rabid Saints fan, and a huge New Orleans devotee. I'm sure this made him very happy.
ReplyDeleteFine, NOLA fans win. Just go and show ppl with actual talent playing instruments and celebrating. My memory of niner's wins runs more to drunken shouting and horn honking (not instruments, just cars) I'm glad they won. They played a great game!
